What is supported living?

Supported living is support in a person’s own home, under their own tenancy. The landlord and the support provider are different organisations. It is not a care home. This guide is about supported living for adults.

The person has their own home

People usually live in a shared house with a small number of other tenants, or in a single flat or bungalow. They sign a tenancy. Their home is theirs, not the support provider’s.

Lintern Care’s supported living is for adults aged 18 and over. It is not a 16–18 or children’s service, and it is not supported living for older people as a primary group.

Housing and support stay separate

Rent, bills and the tenancy sit with the housing arrangement. Support sits with the person’s plan. If support needs to change, that should not mean losing a home.

Some people receive one-to-one hours. Some share support hours with other tenants. Many have a mix. Hours can include evenings, weekends, nights or 24-hour support where that is assessed and commissioned.

How people usually access support in Essex

Most people need a social care assessment from Essex County Council Adult Social Care. The Council can say whether supported living is a good option and how housing and support are arranged. A family member or friend can be part of that conversation.

For tenancies, visiting properties, rent and bills, read the Council’s page rather than a provider summary: Supported living — Essex County Council.

How Lintern Care approaches this

We provide the support, not the housing. Plans are written with the person, around their day. People are supported by a small, consistent team in West Essex—Uttlesford, Epping Forest and Harlow.

Read supported living in West Essex for how that looks in practice, or who we support if you are checking whether this is the right service.

Tell us what good support would look like

If you are looking for support in Uttlesford, Epping Forest or Harlow, we would like to understand what matters to you. Families, advocates and professionals are welcome to contact us too.
